Is Tattooing an Art? 

What is the definition of art? According to the encyclopedia, art is a diverse range of (and products of) human activities involving creative imagination to express technical proficiency, beauty, emotional power, or conceptual ideas. It should stimulate our thoughts, emotions, beliefs or ideas. It speaks both to sense and instinct, Music, dance, painting and literature are usually counted among arts. Humankind doesn't need it for surviving however it has been created in this way since the beginning of the world. In some periods artists (musicians, poets, singers or painters) were put as someone in connection with gods, their inspiration was sacred. May tattooists be added into this noble society? 

Primary function of art is aesthetical. A good art piece cannot leave anyone indifferent: it is necessary to say I like it or I don't like it. This is something that matches tattooing perfectly. The other function of tattooing which is typical especially for modern art is the ability of provoking and expressing one's feelings and attitudes. What are the means the tattooing art works with? Shapes, colours and human body - it is a unique combination which deserves to be counted among arts right next to sculpture and painting. The last element is difficult to deal with. To harmonize tattoo artist's ideas with an imperfect body is a demanding task - even if it is only scalp micropigmentation.  SMP is not only inky dots covering the scalp, they have to match the natural appearance of the person, his shape of head, complexion type. Badly led hairline could spoil the ultimate effect completely. That's why the teams of special tattooing clinics call themselves artists providing artisan scalp micropigmentation. 

Art can heal - there is absolutely no doubt about it. It helps to see things from another point of view, eliminate stress and contribute to self -knowledge.  Know yourself (gnóthi se autón) the ancient Greeks used to say and a modern man adds Be yourself. Regarding this, what art can be better than tattooing? It is the only art which can heal the creative subject (a tattooist) and patient object (a tattooed person) as well. For the first  one the creation is the refreshing process, for the second the cure consists in the opportunity of expressing oneself and besides it a surgical-like treatment - in case the tattooed person is solving his problem with hair loss by scalp micropigmentation. There are many possibilities on how to create thick hair. The dotty tattooing can cover the whole scalp or fill in only the bald or thin spots. More “audacious” clients sometimes combine decent SMP with real tattooing - a little picture or an ornament can have its place behind the ear or on the back of the head. There are no limits to imagination in art - and in tattooing.  

The Greek word for art is “techné” - the original word for universal international word “technique”. How shall we understand it? Art is the way to make things and life more beautiful.  Art is not only something in exhibition and concert halls and museums, it is a way of daily life, we can find it in clothes and jewelry and other daily necessities.
